To ensure the rest of this is not misunderstood I would like to preface it with the fact that I stand with the people of the Ukraine and wish for nothing but a swift end to this (and any) war. Having grown up in war I could not possibly wish this pain on anyone.
Having said that I am disappointed with the double standard that I see surfacing as the world reacts to this war. Somehow the war being in Europe, affecting white, blond, blue eyed people seems to stir much more emotion than say the numerous heinous wars that are taking place in the Middle East and Africa among so many others. The fact that the aggressor is someone many love to hate makes the emotion even stronger. But does that even matter?
The media seems to love comparing the refugees from the Ukraine to the ones in Syria and Afghanistan – making sure to highlight that these situations are not the same. The Ukrainian refugees, they say, are European, civilized, not poor, not Arab, not Muslim, and not expected to have war in their region of the world.
I am honestly disgusted and I hope that every single one of us can take a moment to reflect on this. Why should certain parts of the world be associated with war and why are we ok with this? Is a human life more valuable just because that victim and their life looks more like us and our lives? There are no refugees and no victims of war that don’t deserve our sympathy. I hope we can put just as much energy into the rejection of all ongoing wars everywhere, and show our support for all refugees regardless of their religious preferences, skin color, race, social status, and origin.
