Gay life in Boston

With so many young people and a high level of education, being gay in the capital of the state that was the first to implement gay marriage is no big deal. Boston attracts a lot of students, so I thought this post may be helpful to those new in the city.

Gay Events

LGBT film festival: Typically hosted at the museum of fine arts annually in April.

The Welcoming Committee: Email group that plans many diverse lgbt events. One of those monthly events is Guerrilla Queer Bar where they take over a straight bar and turn it gay for the night 🙂

Gay bars/clubsBoston, in general, is more of a bar scene than a clubbing scene.

Club Cafe: South end. Most popular Boston gay bar that’s been around for many decades. Restaurant, bar, club, wed night karaoke is fun.

Paradise: Cambridge. Dive bar, strippers, underwear nights, avoid the occasional old creeps. Can get raunchy here.

Machine: Fenway, Bar, club, pool, young, trashy but in a fun way. Lesbian nights here too.

House of Blues: Fenway. Saturdays only, big dance club, gogos. Great Halloween party. See post picture.

Cure: Theatre District. Typically a straight lounge, however, Wednesdays is a gay Latinos night.

Candibar: Theater District. Hot mess Sundays, nice place, mixed crowd, heard this place may close.

The Alley: Financial district hidden bar, bears, older crowd.

Jacques Cabaret: Theater district. Drag shows.

Dbar: South Boston. Restaurant, lounge, bar, decent food.

Gay Areas

South End: Diverse, upscale, historic red brick buildings, high end restaurants, art galleries, gay neighborhood

Jamaica Plain/Dorchester: Lots and lots of gay residents and expected to become the new south end. Yuppies. Not very visually appealing.

Provincetown:  On the very tip of Cape Cod. This is a town literally fully inhabited by the gay community. Fun to visit for a day or two. Don’t miss the lobster roll at “The Canteen”. Best way to get there is by ferry from the Boston Harbor (90 mins).

Health & Services

Fenway Health: Medical and mental health care services to the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender communities.

Boston Glass:Behavioral health, mentorship, youth leadership, and community education for lgbt youth.

Arbour Triangle: Medical and behavioral health care services to the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender communities.
